Exercise 2.1: Focal Lengths whilst Stationary

Exercise

Find a scene that has depth. From a fixed position, take a sequence of five or six shots at different focal lengths without changing your viewpoint.

Results

The images shown represent different focal lengths for the same scene.  I can be seen that as the length gets longer, the view narrows and brings the most distant objects closer.  The image at the long end of the scale is a ‘cut out’ of the wide scene,  perspectives remain the same for all of the objects in all of the different focal lengths.  Without moving, nothing in the image changes.

It is worth noting that the image is level, it is the building that has grown lop sided with age that makes the images look like they are on a slant!
