Assignment 4: Rework Post Tutor Feedback

Reflection

Overall I was pleased with the feedback I got from this assignment.

I set out to capture a specific theme of Man versus Nature and use the technique that I had identified when researching Schmidt.  I was pleased that my tutor thought that these were apparent in the same way that I thought they were.

In a few of the images, on reflection, I seem to have resorted back to the ‘magazine’ style of capture and went for low-down capture that does not really represent what I was trying to capture, essentially I reverted back to aesthetics over what I was trying to convey in the images.  This is a shame because if nothing else, the physical exertion just to capture these images in the middle of very hot days was extreme!

My tutor suggested some replacement images that fit the theme of man versus nature much more than some of the images where I reverted to aesthetics.  I have to say, I agree and so in my final set shown in this post, I have replaced a number of the images and ended up with a slightly larger number.

My tutor also questioned the naming of the images and suggested that it is not necessary.  When I created the original submission, I felt naming added to the overall submission.  Looking back on the assignment now, I think that naming the images is what dragged my thinking away from my theme of man v nature and onto selection based on images that were perhaps more easily named.  This pulled the editing away from the process of selecting a body of images that contribute to a cohesive whole – and it is the whole that can be named.  In this revised submission, I have therefore removed naming and simply numbered the images.

Overall, I feel that these suggestions and small changes to my submission do improve it so I am glad that I have made them.  I am also pleased that I feel I have progressed a lot in terms of my ability to create a theme for a project, capture that theme using deliberate methods and techniques, and edit my images to produce a cohesive set.  I think this assignment is far better than any that have gone before.  Although I think that I could now go back and ‘redo’ all previous assignments, I am choosing not to do that as I want my module as a whole to illustrate my progress through the course.
